A bespoke suit in five days

Bhambi’s Custom Tailors offers a 5-day rush service at its Upper East Side atelier: a fully bespoke suit, cut from your own pattern and fitted on you, ready to wear on the fifth day.

Can you get a bespoke suit in 5 days in New York? Yes. Bhambi’s Custom Tailors, a family atelier at 14 East 60th Street since 1968, makes bespoke suits in five days as a rush service. You’re measured and choose your cloth on day one, attend fittings on days two and four, and collect the finished suit on day five. Most New York bespoke houses quote four to ten weeks for a suit.

What happens on each of the five days

The rush suit goes through the same steps as every Bhambi’s suit. The schedule is shorter because the workroom gives your suit priority, not because any step is skipped.

  1. Consultation, measurements and cloth

You meet the tailor at the atelier to talk through the occasion, the cut and the details: lapel width, button stance, pockets, lining and trouser style. Then you’re measured and your posture is noted, from shoulder slope to how you stand.

You choose your cloth from the bolts held at the atelier. That evening, your paper pattern is drafted by hand from your measurements.

    Your visit
    In person, about 90 minutes
    In the workroom
    Pattern drafted
  2. Cutting and the baste fitting

Your cloth is cut from your pattern and loosely tacked together with white basting thread. You try on this rough shell so the tailor can see how the cloth sits on you.

Shoulders, chest, waist and sleeve pitch are adjusted and chalked directly on the garment. This fitting is where the suit becomes yours.

    Your visit
    Baste fitting, about 45 minutes
    In the workroom
    Cutting and basting
  3. Construction

The suit is taken apart, re-cut to the marks from your fitting, and built properly. The chest is shaped, the shoulders and collar are set, and the trousers are assembled.

You don’t need to come in today.

    In the workroom
    Jacket and trouser construction
  4. The forward fitting

You try on the suit close to its finished form, with sleeves set and linings in. The tailor checks balance, sleeve length, trouser break and how the jacket closes when you move and sit.

Any final refinements are marked for finishing.

    Your visit
    Forward fitting, about 45 minutes
    In the workroom
    Final adjustments
  5. Finishing, final fitting and collection

Buttonholes are worked, buttons sewn, hems finished and the whole suit pressed. You return for a last fitting to confirm everything is right, and you leave wearing it or carrying it in a garment bag.

Final fitting and collection, about 30 minutes

Before you book a rush suit

Clients often use the rush for

  • A wedding, as the groom, best man or guest, when the date crept up
  • A business trip to New York with a week between meetings
  • A gala, award ceremony, interview or court appearance
  • Replacing a suit lost or damaged while travelling

What you’ll need

  • To be in Manhattan on days one, two, four and five
  • To choose from the cloths held at the atelier
  • To book ahead, because only a few rush suits are cut each week
  • The shoes you plan to wear, for the trouser fittings

Questions about the 5-day bespoke suit

Is a 5-day suit really bespoke?

Yes. Your suit is cut from a paper pattern drafted from your own measurements, not adjusted from a stock size, and it goes through a baste fitting, a forward fitting and a final fitting. That’s what separates bespoke from made-to-measure. The rush changes the schedule, not the method.

How much does a 5-day rush suit cost?

Every rush suit is quoted individually, because the price depends on the cloth you choose and the details of the cut. Call the atelier or book a consultation, tell us your date, and we’ll walk you through the options.

How many fittings are there in five days?

Three: a baste fitting on day two, a forward fitting on day four and a final fitting on day five. Measurements and your consultation take place on day one.

Do I need to be in New York for all five days?

You need to visit the atelier on days one, two, four and five. Day three is construction only, so you’re free that day.

Can I choose any fabric for a rush suit?

Rush suits are made from cloths already held at the atelier, so there’s no wait for a mill delivery. If you have a specific cloth in mind, call ahead and we’ll tell you whether it’s in stock.
