The Chesterfield is single-breasted with a fly front concealing the buttons, a velvet collar, and a clean, straight cut that falls to the knee or below. It is the definitive choice for business formal, black-tie events, and anyone who wants one coat that works across every dress occasion. Available in single or double-breasted configurations. Best fabric: Heavyweight wool, cashmere, or cashmere-wool blend in charcoal, navy, or camel.
The Polo Coat A double-breasted coat with patch pockets, a half belt at the back, and turn-back cuffs — originally worn between chukkers at polo matches. The Polo coat is relaxed, aristocratic, and unmistakably classic. It works beautifully in camel hair or camel-colored cashmere and is one of the most requested styles at Bhambi’s. Choosing the right fabric weight is as important as choosing the right style. Here is how to match your overcoat fabric to New York City’s climate and your intended wear season:
Lightweight (280–380g) — Early Fall & Mild Days Lighter weight wools and fine flannels are ideal for September through November and the unpredictable warm spells New York throws in December and March. A topcoat in a lightweight fabric layers comfortably over a suit without adding bulk and is the right choice for clients who run warm or commute on the subway. Best fabrics at this weight: Lightweight flannel, fine wool, covert cloth.
Mid-Weight (400–500g) — November Through February The workhorse weight for New York City winters. Mid-weight wools and cashmere blends offer genuine warmth without the heaviness of a true winter fabric. This is the most popular weight range for Chesterfield and Crombie commissions at Bhambi’s — versatile enough for daily wear across the coldest months. Best fabrics at this weight: Wool-cashmere blend, heavyweight flannel, tweed.
Heavyweight (550g+) — Peak Winter & Extreme Cold For the depths of January and February, a heavyweight fabric delivers serious warmth and a luxurious drape that only improves with weight. Melton cloth, thick cashmere, and heavyweight British wools all fall into this category. These fabrics are heavier to carry but incomparable in warmth and presence. Best fabrics at this weight: Melton, heavyweight cashmere, double-faced wool, camel hair.
The Pinnacle — Vicuña Above all fabric weights and categories sits vicuña — the rarest natural fiber on earth. Measuring just 12 microns in diameter, vicuña is finer than the finest cashmere, featherlight in the hand, and extraordinarily warm for its weight. It is the fabric of Incan royalty, once forbidden to anyone outside the ruling class, and today produced under strict conservation protocols in the high Andes.
